La Reina 121

La Reina 121 Cultural Centre – El Cabanyal
La Reina 121 is a municipal cultural centre of the Valencian City Council, renovated in 2020 and opening its doors to the neighbourhood in May 2024, after an extensive restoration by Arkítera studio and a public call for management proposals. In September 2023, Pro21cultural won the public tender with a community-focused cultural management project.
This facility is designed to be a local cultural centre, inviting residents to rethink how they want to shape the culture of their neighbourhood. It is a community-driven initiative, offering an opportunity to “create together,” build relationships, and strengthen the community ties—encouraging the development of an engaged and active citizenship.
The space is managed by a team that knows and lives in the neighbourhood, led by Olga Álvarez, a cultural manager who previously directed the Teatre El Musical del Cabanyal-Canyamelar from 2015 to 2019. She is joined by Jrisa Lialia, a cultural manager and multidisciplinary artist with a career spanning neighbourhood cultural initiatives and various theatre companies, as well as Danya Loyola, an ecofeminist cultural manager and visual artist.
Mission:
The core purpose of our project is to provide a public service to the community within the framework of a municipal socio-cultural facility designed for local engagement. We aim to activate and co-program the space alongside neighbourhood organizations and community groups through cultural mediation, in an environment characterized by ethnic diversity, social exclusion, vulnerability, and a mix of different socio-economic realities. Our commitment to inclusion and a holistic, integrative approach forms the foundation of this initiative.
Vision:
To become a reference cultural facility within the neighbourhood, firmly established in its functional and operational role for the diverse local population. We are committed to engaging with the urban environment and providing a high-quality portfolio of socio-cultural services for residents. Our transformative vision of social reality seeks to empower and promote an active, conscious, and engaged citizenship through culture.
